An arboriculturist, more commonly known as an arborist, is one in the profession of the cultivation, management, and study of trees. This may also include shrubs, vine, forestry, and various forms of horticulture.
Simply put, an arborist is a tree surgeon. They focus on the health and safety of individual plants and trees. Just as in the medical field, there are doctors that specialize in specific areas, arborist specialized in different skills. There are many types of professions within arboriculture. Two of the main ones are certified and consulting.
In most cases, a certified arborist is what most people think about when they think of professional tree removal, pruning, and lightning protection. Consulting arborists are professions that deal with trees in a legal manner.
Louisiana Requirements for Arborists
In the state of Louisiana, arborist must be able to pass the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.) which an intensive four-part exam. The practical exam consists of a walking tour where applicants are to identify selected plant material. Applicants are to write the genus, species, and common names of the plant material identified.
Arborists do not get enough credit for what they do. Their job is so important to the safety of others. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Arborists can recommend the right tree for a specific area, correct placement as well as how to properly plant trees. A tree in the wrong location nearly always results in future problems from limited growing space, insects, diseases, or poor growth. While many people can just hack down a tree, it takes a professional to know how to save a tree and save the surrounding landscape.
